CNO Financial Group Assistant General Counsel in Carmel, Indiana
CNO Financial Group is currently recruiting for Assistant General Counsel to work on our legal team based in Carmel, IN.
This role is responsible for directing legal/compliance counsel and autonomously providing a full range of legal advice and services in one or more specialized practice areas (including but not limited to product development, marketing/sales, claims/underwriting/PHS, labor & employment, agent conduct, privacy, intellectual property, product management, information technology, and/or litigation management) across a major insurance segment of the enterprise. The role will lead or direct the legal and compliance review of respective area materials for insurance segment products. The role may manage internal counsel, outside counsel, and/or internal compliance professionals and will personally engage in providing counsel to support innovative and higher-risk area initiatives for segment. This position works in a collaborative manner with all levels of management and executives, and functional business areas, to ensure compliance, and risk appropriate action.
What you'll be doing:
Leads and direct the legal or compliance review of respective enterprise wide area (product development, sales/marketing) for a major insurance segment. Sets team objectives, goals, and action plans and manages to the successful accomplishment. May serve as managing attorney for more junior attorneys, legal analysts, and/or paralegal/support staff.
Provides legal counsel and compliance guidance to support new product development, new product advertising, product management.
Works proactively with business partners to identify legal issues and manage risk within his/her specialized area(s) of legal practice. Serves as an expert counsel and provides compliance oversight on short term specific risks and corporate initiatives; level of risk may exceed $1MM. Confers with internal/external counsel on relatively complex legal matters of high risk.
Interprets complex state laws related to product design, new business, e-commerce etc. Creates reports/communications that will be used in board committees, senior management and/or with regulators.
Frequently manages external counsel on outsourced legal initiatives. Collaborates with legal analysts to support compliance with state regulations; drive direction accordingly.
Advises, collaborates and coordinates with leaders in business segments and enterprise functions (i.e. actuarial, marketing, operations, etc.) on matters relating to legal and compliance risks pertaining respective area. Serves as the Law Department’s representative on enterprise projects within his/her specialized area(s) of legal practice.
Monitors and evaluates industry and regulatory developments, surveys the potential impact corporate policies, and recommend appropriate response to changes in the regulatory or industry environment.
Collaborates with other legal associates, corporate and business units, including CNO’s broker dealer and retail registered investment advisor to identify and address regulatory risk in operational functions.
Responsible for developing and executing short term operational plans that support the execution of higher level compliance and legal strategies.
Reviews and negotiates mid-level to complex contracts as determined by total spend and the risk of breach.
Represents the Company on mediations, including those of relatively high risk and exposure.
What you will need to bring:
In-depth knowledge of legal/compliance principles and how it relates to the enterprise wide area supported.
Strong knowledge of life, annuity and health insurance products, and corresponding regulations.
Strong understanding of respective business area (marketing/sales, digital technology, product development, etc) as it pertains to legal and compliance requirements.
Effective at identifying and communicating solutions.
Ability to think creatively and partner with business to evolve solutions
Ability to effectively identify and communicate key legal and compliance risks to all areas of the organization.
Proven ability to manage internal resources, as well as outside counsel and other contracted resources, to provide high quality and timely services and guidance within established product development schedules.
Proven experience identifying, developing, and implementing plans to mitigate enterprise compliance risk.
Strong communication skills to inform on highly technical specialized matters
Juris Doctorate required; licensed to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
Typically, a minimum of ten years of legal experience; at least five years in the insurance industry is preferred.
AIRC and FLMI preferred.
