CNO Financial Group Director Employee Relations and Compliance in Chicago, Illinois
The Director, Employee Relations and Compliance is responsible for leading the teams that act as the first point of contact for the provision of employee and manager advice, guidance and query resolution. This leader will work closely with HR leadership to establish Employee Relations and Compliance as a critical business function that generates insights to enable the CNO People Strategy. This role will also partner to build and expand the Employee Relations capability, play a critical role in the enhancement of the MyHR and employee relations customer relationship and case management systems, provide leadership and partnership to leaders and employees to maintain positive employee relations, deliver proactive employee relations initiatives, and drive consistency and efficiency while building support for increased employee engagement through the delivery of effective resolution of employee relations issues.
Key Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Manages the strategic direction of Employee Relations and Compliance; provides leadership and supervision to all members of the staff.
Oversees MyHR service center and supervises team in handling Tier 1 inquiries
Drives continuous process improvement and self-service capabilities.
Identifies insights from data and analytics to proactively inform process, policy and program improvements; shares findings, trends, emerging issues and other insights with key partners to develop and deliver a plan which links to HR strategy and improves the employee experience
Creates and drives the implementation of Employee Relations and Compliance strategies, guidelines, and procedures.
Establishes, maintains, and partners with internal and external employment counsel and HR Business Partners to effectively manage possible conflicts related to employment practices.
Partners with Legal counsel to assist Foreign Associates and Talent Acquisition on the immigration process to provide and obtain appropriate documentation and advice throughout; this includes, but is not limited to, I-9s, Green Cards and visas.
Partners closely with key stakeholders to enhance the existing case management tool, including reporting and consistency.
Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Provides leadership to the team to ensure employee advocacy, objective investigations, and sound risk mitigation for the firm.
Holds team accountable to conduct timely investigative interviews and provide appropriate stakeholder updates.
Leads team members in managing most critical and sensitive employee relations cases for the company.
Partners with HR program owners to develop, update and communicate new and revised HR policies.
Conducts and leads complex investigations related to employee claims and advises leaders and HR Business Partner teams.
Ensures consistent application of policies and procedures in guiding/consulting or reviewing complex Employee Relations concerns while leveraging expertise of other stakeholders.
Leads the development and adoption of new tools and processes that result in improved manager and employee experience, outcomes and employment risk mitigation.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Experience both managing and building a highly effective team of HR practitioners.
Use of online case management/customer relationship management systems as well as using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent oral, written, and presentation communications skills; experience tailoring messages to individuals at all levels within the organization including individual contributors, managers and executive leaders.
Proven interpersonal skills with a reputation as diplomatic, professional, collaborative, approachable, and knowledgeable.
Strong knowledge and experience developing and applying organizational HR policies, procedures, and protocols.
Strong knowledge and experience with conflict management.
Excellent negotiation and risk management skills.
Strong ability to influence outcomes.
Approximately 20% domestic travel.
Work beyond normal business hours may be required occasionally to support business needs, projects or operational support that may be required outside of normal business hours or on weekends.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent work experience. JD or advanced degree preferred.
Combined 10+ years Employee Relations and Employment Law experience that includes 5+ years investigatory experience.
Minimum 5 years experience directly managing complex employee relations issues or advising corporate clients around employment practice.
