Overall Job Summary
The Manager of Payroll Services & Leave is responsible for overseeing the payroll function, including payroll tax and payroll accounting, in accordance with industry standards, regulatory agencies, and company objectives and policies. This position is also responsible for leading team members to ensure pay is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations, handling customer questions and complaints, and managing payroll and leave administration vendors.
Key Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Directs and monitors processing of payroll and time recording to ensure accuracy and timeliness of payrolls, account postings, balancing, and reconciliations.
Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage and hour laws and best practices.
Supervises entry of additional earnings, deductions, and benefit adjustments including, but not limited to: retro pay calculations, bonus entry, tuition reimbursement, garnishments, 401(k) plan, deferred compensation plan, and equity transactions; audits information entered into the system for processing.
Reviews all tax returns and regulatory correspondence to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Establishes, maintains and monitors key controls to ensure accuracy of financial statements and validity, accuracy, and timeliness of controls.
Facilitates audis by providing records and documentation to auditors.
Reviews and tests all systems changes having an impact on department or payroll/ time-recording processing.
Performs General Ledger integration and other related account reconciliations.
Leads payroll, tax, time reporting, etc. problem solving efforts; provides recommendations on potential solutions and prepares/coordinates appropriate employee communications.
Identifies, recommends and implements updates to payroll systems, policies and practices
Drives continuous process improvement and automation.
Provides backup, coverage and support to payroll analysts inclusive of payroll processing and compensation program processing.
Supervises team members and related administrative duties inclusive of Leave Administration and Tier 2 associate inquiries, complaints and/or escalations.
Manages third party vendor relationships with payroll and leave administration providers, driving for consistency and quality in service delivery.
Develops and mentors team members in the performance of their duties, establishing work priorities, cross training, building capabilities and in achieving management objectives.
May perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of the payroll function, including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent oral and written communications skills; experience tailoring messages to individuals at all levels within the organization including individual contributors, managers and executive leaders.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work in fast pace and deadline driven environment.
Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline; or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree preferred.
Typically a minimum 7 years of related work experience, including previous supervisory or management experience.
Minimum 3 years of Workday experience, including module expertise in Payroll, Time and Attendance and Absence Management is preferred.
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) is preferred.
